Opening Garage Rotterdam

The official opening of Garage Rotterdam took place on Friday night 2 March with its first exhibition: Hermetic City. No less than 750 visitors came to have a look in the rebuilt garage, while enjoying a drink, music and of course the beautiful artworks. Because of the overwhelming enthusiasm, a queue was actually formed in the Goudsewagenstraat. Have you become curious? The garagedoors are now open to the public.

Museumnacht

Garage Rotterdam and the opening exhibition Hermetic City could be discovered during the Museumnacht. Many visitors enjoyed the endless ideas and imaginative thoughts given shape by eight visual artists to create a certain order in our inner and outside worlds.
A visit to Garage was extra delicious and very sweet thanks to the chocolate pop-up bar of Maatschappij Voor Volksgeluk (MAVV). One could taste the cocoabutter-sculptures by artist Sanne Luijben and the remarkable chocolate products by the Rotterdam-based company Chocoholic. The garage door stayed open until all the chocolate had been eaten!

Opening Necessarily True

Necessarily True is the second exhibition of Garage Rotterdam about the necessity of having a personal artistic style when creating representations of inner worlds. In this digital age, the visual artists participating in this exhibition have once more explored the meaning of being in direct physical contact with their material. This offers an ample playing field for the subconscious. The original, uncensored image ends up on canvas or paper like a visual primal scream without giving reason a chance to interfere. Similar to outsider art and ethnic art, there is an inner, emotional necessity in which the outward form merely serves the representation of a feeling. Intuitively representing the external world was a goal for early expressionists but for the artists of Necessarily True, it is a means.

17 March until 8 July 2012 with Andrew Gilbert, Marie Aly, Ben Cottrell, Paula Mueller, Robert Nicol and Derk Thijs.

Film night in Garage Rotterdam with surrealist cinema

Garage Rotterdam organises a special film programme to accompany Into the Labyrinth on Friday 30 November. The exhibition reveals traces of surrealism in the work of eight contemporary visual artists. Following a brief introduction by curator Hans van der Ham four surrealist films will be shown including Entr’acte (1924) and Un chien andalou (1928).

The programme is as follows:
19.30 hrs Welcome
20.00 hrs Introduction by curator Hans van der Ham
20.30 hrs Four films
22.00 hrs Drinks and music by O’Henn and Jornos.

Tickets for this event are € 4.50 (students € 3.00).

Entr’acte (1924)
Entr’acte is a short French film produced by René Clair. This avant-garde cinema classic was originally made for the interval of the Relâche ballet directed by Francis Picabia in Paris. The music for the ballet as well as the film was composed by Erik Satie. Key figures from the Parisian art scene at the time, including Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp, can be seen in this chain of absurd clips.

Un chien andalou (1928)
Un chien andalou is a famous surrealist film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. It is a compilation of images they had seen in their dreams the night before. A famous scene in the film shows an eye being cut with a razor blade. When the film was first shown in Paris in cinema Studio 28 the police received many complaints.

Brandstof

Brandstof is a thematic event about every exhibition held at Garage Rotterdam.

Sunday 24 March at 15.00 hrs: an afternoon with lectures and a discussion to accompany the Transformation exhibition.

Due to the developments in biotechnology and robotics but also in bio-art the question arises: is there a human soul? This is the central theme of a special programme with lectures on Sunday 24 March 2013 featuring three important speakers. Philosopher Désanne van Brederode predominantly writes and lectures about issues regarding our outlook on life. Martin uit den Boogaard, one of the visual artists participating in Transformation, extracts energy from dead organic matter. Professor of Art History, Robert Zwijnenberg, University of Leiden specialises in bio-art and ethics.

The three speakers will each give a lecture in which they address the theme from their background. After the lectures there will be a debate led by art historian Arthur Crucq.

The clear boundaries between life and death are fading due to the rapid developments in the biosciences. Transformation, the fifth group exhibition at Garage Rotterdam, presents this theme in the work of ten contemporary visual artists. They share a fascination with death, with life and with the ability to control both.

Featuring Nathaniel Mellors (GB), Koen Vanmechelen (BE), Jeroen Kuster (NL), Tinkebell (NL), Stan Wannet (NL), Martin uit den Bogaard (NL), Uli Westphal (D), Ronald van der Meijs (NL), Michiel van Overbeek (NL), Floris Kaayk (NL) and TU Delft robot Flame.

Brandstof

Brandstof is a regular event at Garage Rotterdam providing background content about the exhibitions. Two lectures to accompany the Beyond Tradition exhibition will be given on Friday 7 June at 20.00 hrs.

The creation process, the struggle with the material, is key in Beyond Tradition. Art history is always just around the corner in this: some visual artists seem to respond directly to the role of creation in our contemporary digital age. This increased reflection on the past is a topical theme. For example, the exhibition Hand Made in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam deals with this history of craftsmanship.

Light will be shed on this theme by Dr. Edward de Bock (curator at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam) and Dr. Rob van Gerwen (philosopher) on Friday 7 June. Both these speakers have a clear affinity with the ‘ability to create’ or the creation process in visual arts.

Edward de Bock will discuss the role of materials in ethnic art in his lecture. The ethnic artist transforms materials into a new reality. Materials are not used to represent or refer to a different reality – the way Western visual artists may do – but the material has in fact become the new reality itself. Ethnic art relates to the origin of creation in its materials, shapes and colours.

Rob van Gerwen will illustrate how the original intention of an artist may be changed, quite apart from the creation process. For example, the paintings by Rembrandt were created intuitively based on his struggle with paint. However, in our digital age his paintings have become ready-made icons (with or without Photoshopping them). The original intention of the artist and the clearly visible creation of the work of art have disappeared.

Opening On the Edge

The exhibition On the Edge opens on Friday 30 August 2013 at 20.00 hrs. Guest curator of this exhibiton is Roosmarijn Hompe (1986)

The group exhibition On the Edge is about exploring various visual disciplines. As if for the first time, basic questions about the discipline are raised. How is shape created and what are the limitations of the material? What is functionality and what is aesthetics? How do you transform abstract ideas into concrete images that appeal to the imagination?

This multidisciplinary approach leads to a wide range of means of expression. Despite this multitude of options, many are returning to the roots of their discipline: what are the limitations and opportunities of a visual discipline? What can we learn from other disciplines?

The visual artists and designers who are taking part in this exhibition are also exploring the boundaries. Not just of their own discipline but also of their imagination.

With Frank Bruggeman (NL), Lonneke van der Palen (NL), Wies Preijde (NL), Rogier Arents (NL), Jacob Raeder (VS), Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes (NL), Jasper Nijs (NL), Martin Fenne (NL)

Brandstof

Brandstof is a regular event at Garage Rotterdam providing background information about the exhibitions. A round table session about the exhibition On the Edge will be held on Sunday afternoon 6 October at 15.00 hrs. The main question is: To what extent should art education be either autonomous or market-driven considering our current economic and political climate?

Art education in the Netherlands has recently been under attack. The autonomy of art education is increasingly under pressure due to current Dutch cultural policy. Fewer visual artists are being trained. What’s more, educational institutions are forced to: offer unique curricula to distinguish themselves, make student selection procedures stricter and focus on creating and marketing top talent.

The ideal of the creative entrepreneur is spreading rapidly and has now been included in the curriculum of design academies. Educational institutions have implemented project-based education and pay more attention to entrepreneurship in their curricula in an attempt to produce market-proof designers and visual artists. What will the implications be for experimenting and researching in art education? Will these graduates have something meaningful to say?

This topic will be debated live by Bas van Beek (designer, former head of designLAB, Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam), Jeroen van den Eijnde (researcher and lecturer at ArtEz Arnhem), Cynthia Hathaway (designer, lecturer at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, Design Academy Eindhoven and others) and Annemartine van Kesteren (Design curator, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, lecturer at Design Academy Eindhoven).

Opening Behind Images

The exhibition Behind Images opens on Friday 15 November 2013 at 20.00 hrs.

There is a grey area between the abstract imagination and the actual art object.
The group exhibition Behind Images deals with this battle between intuition and ratio in which emotions, coincidence and context play an important role. How is the invisible made visible by the visual artist? What is hidden behind the reality that we can observe?

In Behind Images, six visual artists are looking for the underlying truth. Their work is no longer a representation of a reality they observed. Their work is a new reality, guided by their emotions and imagination. When has the art object been contrived and when has it been ‘freely’ created?
Drawings, sculptures and paintings illustrate this very fine line between emotions and ratio.

With Navid Nuur (IR), Conrad Shawcross (GB), Jochen Mühlenbrink (DE), Alexandra Roozen (NL), Gabrielle van de Laak (NL), Jonas Wijtenburg (NL)

Brandstof

Brandstof is a regular event providing background information about the Garage Rotterdam exhibitions. We would like to invite you to two lectures to accompany the Behind Images exhibition on Sunday afternoon 15 December 2013 at 15.00 hrs.

The group exhibition Behind Images at Garage Rotterdam is about abstract art and the battle between intuition and sense. When is a work of art a product of the mind and when has it been created intuitively? How do emotions, coincidence and context influence the creative process?

The speakers are Sacha Bronwasser (art critic for Dutch national newspaper De Volkskrant) and Susanne van Els (violinist and Classical Music coordinator at the Royal Conservatory for Music and Dance in The Hague). In their lectures, both speakers will explore the grey area between sense and intuition on Sunday afternoon 15 December 2013.

Sacha Bronwasser will shed light on the role of intuition and coincidence when writing a text. She will show a short video that cannot be expressed in language to illustrate her point. She will involve the audience in this experiment.
Susanne van Els will discuss the link between sense and emotions when experiencing music. She opposes the idea that making music is mainly about emotions. According to Susanne van Els, music is simply about music.
