On 4 July, you can reserve a seat at our dinner table to enjoy a delicious four course menu and wine pairing in between the artworks of the exhibition Unknown Landscapes. The curator of this exhibition – Cynthia Jordens – together with some of the artists will be present during the evening.

Wednesday 9 July | 3.30 – 5.30 PM

One of the works on show in our current exhibition Unknown Landscapes, is the installation Becoming Alphabet (2023) by Katarina Zdjelar. “The sinuous glass pieces in Becoming Alphabet (2023), evoke the sense of an alphabet being created or rediscovered – perhaps representing forgotten or unknown forms of expression. These forms resemble a dance or fragmented sentences composed of “orphan signs” – symbols or letters that stand alone or lack connection to established systems. It invites viewers to imagine collective engagement in the “unknown,” proposing this as an open- ended, speculative question about togetherness as something that is in the making.”

During a special performance on Wednesday 9 July, the installation Becoming Alphabet functions as a score and invites the artists Nina Hitz, Tisa World and Myriam Méret for improvisation.

Prior to the performance, our curator Cynthia Jordens will host an exhibition tour, together with Katarina Zdjelar delving deeper into her installations on show at Garage Rotterdam.

Language(s)
During this summer break, Garage Rotterdam will become a common ground for the students and alumni of ArtScience (KABK) and the Piet Zwart Institute (WdKA). This exhibition aims to be more than a display, it is an evolving process, a meeting point for conversation, collaboration, and unexpected connections. Through this crossover between institutions, generations, and disciplines, we wish to cultivate a sense of continuity and exchange for students coming from different backgrounds and sometimes at different stages of their practices. It is an opportunity to connect, cross paths, and allow ourselves to shape new ideas. By creating a space for showing, listening, performing, and discussing, we hope to weave new connections within those artistic communities while showcasing the wide range of mediums and practices hosted in those schools. The theme « Language(s) » aims to convey these principles while encouraging a constructive dialogue shaped by a multitude of expressions.

Garage Rotterdam opens up their space during summer breaks to inspiring projects and initiatives. This open call during the summer of 2025 is organized by Sweet Scope studio, who previously showcased work at Garage Rotterdam.

For over a decade, the exhibition space for contemporary art Garage Rotterdam has been an important part of the Dutch art scene, presenting 45 exhibitions in collaboration with 21 different curators and with over 300 artists.

In the summer of 2025, Garage Rotterdam will launch the Garage Rotterdam Prize for young curators. The winner will create an exhibition at Garage Rotterdam in the spring of 2026.

Do you want to further develop yourself as a curator of Garage Rotterdam?

Create a concept for a group exhibition at Garage Rotterdam based on a theme of your choice, in which you show how the selected artists and their works form a coherent exhibition which expresses your concept. Please take recent developments within contemporary art into account while creating your concept.

The artistic objective that Garage Rotterdam gives its curators is: to create an exhibition that is relevant, layered, and visually intriguing. In your concept you explain how the exhibition is relevant on multiple levels. Describe the (art history) discourses of your artist and artwork selection as well as their mutual coherence within the chosen theme.

Every exhibition at Garage Rotterdam is accompanied by a public program called Brandstof. Brandstof is an in-depth side-program developed by the curator and tailored to the exhibition. The challenge is to deepen the theme in an attractive way, so that a wide audience feels attracted to visit the program. Include your idea for Brandstof in your proposal.

One of the most important objectives of Garage Rotterdam is talent development by, amongst other things, offering opportunities to young curators. Exhibitions present upcoming artists next to established ones. Over the past decade, Garage Rotterdam has collaborated with a large number of emerging artists and curators who have now proven themselves successfully in the field.

Who is eligible?

• You have curated multiple exhibitions
• You have your own view on recent developments in contemporary art
• You are 35 years or younger

Requirements for the curator

• Experience in formulating exhibition concepts
• Organizational experience in the realization of exhibitions and budget control
• A cooperative and flexible attitude

• A short bio, portfolio and CV
• Your proposal for a group exhibition at Garage Rotterdam and the associated Brandstof activity. Describe your concept and the side-program in a maximum of one-page A4. Your proposal can be written in English or Dutch.
• Add 2 pages A4 with images of the artists/artworks you have in mind for the exhibition.

If you are selected, the preparation and production of this exhibition will start in the spring of 2026. We expect you to be available for the preparation (from the beginning of 2026), production and building-up of the exhibition. During the period of the exhibition, we also ask you to be available for events, guided tours and media requests.

The Underdeveloped exhibition series proposes other ways of organising within the cultural world, with a focus on interconnected practices where art contributes to in its own capacity and imagination.

In the third Underdeveloped edition at Garage Rotterdam, the exhibition space is considered a particle of an existing and growing cultural network in Rotterdam – a network containing individuals, places, groups, momentum and energy. During the exhibition period, everyone can make use of a printing workshop, the familiar Underdeveloped kitchen, a shop, library, video room, materials and an educational corner.

Underdeveloped #4 is not about ‘end products’ or the delivery of an individual contribution. That is why all artists are mentioned as a collective. “Networking is not a diagram but a lived rhythm.”

Join this poster printing workshop about ownership and reclaiming public space. In the workshop you will use (analog) printing techniques to make large images with A4’s. By blowing up, scanning & frottage you will enlarge images, make a d.i.y. glue recipe and collectively stick it in and around Garage Rotterdam. With soup!

Join us on Saturday 11 October for a gathering with Isfahan Film Club and WORKNOT!

Central in this event lies the theme of housing and domestic life, and their intersections with precarity and displacement.

“In our extractive and capitalist reality, individual and collective bodies are violated under financial, environmental and (geo)political regimes of oppression and eviction.”

The gathering starts with an introduction by WORKNOT!, followed by a screening of various film excerpts that lead into an open discussion during a community dinner prepared by the collective. The screening serves as an exercise in constructing a narrative from audiovisual documentation of the subjecs, explored across different contexts, urgencies and forms of precarity. In collaboration with Isfahan Film Club, WORKNOT! curated this screening to encourage collective reflection and exchange.

Disaster Cooking

About the event

In March 2025, the European Commission and the High Representative introduced a new strategy to strengthen Europe’s ability to prevent and respond to emerging crises. Among its recommendations: every household should be ready to sustain itself for at least 72 hours — with essentials like food, water, documents, batteries, and more.
Canned goods and protein bars might keep us alive — but do they also nourish our sense of calm or offer the comfort we need in stressful times?

In September, the regional disaster information center Rijnmond Veilig released a cookbook for emergency situations, featuring seven recipes, interviews, and a foreword by the Mayor of Rotterdam. As part of the ongoing project Meals for Inner Peace Research Center – currently on show in Underdeveloped #4 – you can try out some of these recipes at Garage Rotterdam on Sunday 19 October.

Footage Therapy
Saturday 25 October, from 2 PM onwards

Following their first event on housing and domestic life in relation to precarity and displacement, Isfahan Film Club and WORKNOT! invite you to a second gathering: Footage Therapy.

Many of us know the intensity of moving or migrating to a new city—with its unfamiliar rhythms, networks, and systems of control. Adapting to a new place often means negotiating one’s sense of identity and belonging. Yet, there are moments that interrupt this process—when our bodies slow down, when we reconnect, when we feel at home again.

Isfahan Film Club and WORKNOT! invite you to bring memories, images, or fragments that relate to this theme and to the city of Rotterdam. These could be clips from your phone, found footage, or stories spoken aloud. They don’t need to be polished – what matters is the act of sharing and listening. Together, we’ll create an intimate emotional archive of belonging in the city.

With participants’ consent, the session will be recorded and may later be developed into a collective film. The evening concludes with a shared dinner and discussion.

Snails Houses invites you to connect with others by exploring ways we can reconnect with our cultural identity, with our roots, and navigate what “home” and “belonging” means to us, as a community.

About Meal for Collective Inner Peace
“We have experienced three editions of the Underdeveloped exhibition series, which takes a collaborative approach to art and focuses on working together. The concept echoes to the Indonesian word ‘lumbung’, which literally means a communal rice barn. This concept can also be applied to interdisciplinary and collective artistic practices, which can offer mutual aid and support within the network, even in the most extreme cases.”

“Whenever we encounter emergency or prepper kits, they are meant to be individual, or at most to extend to one’s close family. But in times of trouble, we can’t get through it alone. Lumbung thus becomes a helpful idea in critical time. Let’s reimagine the notion of food for emergencies, cook and eat together from shelf-stable ingredients with participating artists from Underdeveloped #4.”

Domestic Notes (Nuraini Juliastuti) and Reading Sideways Press invite you to attend their event Moenipah OS, on Saturday 15 November, 14:00 – 17:00 at Garage Rotterdam.

This lecture is about writing and reading systems – less for conveying and exchanging messages, and more for living knowledge production. The lecture will take place in Grandma’s Cubby – a room in the exhibition Underdeveloped #4 – which is recreated in the memory of Nuraini Juliastuti’s grandmother, Moenipah. Based on the conventional education standard, Moenipah (1924 – 2001) would be considered illiterate since she could not read and write. Throughout her life, Moenipah narrated a rich life guided by an alternative roadmap for reading and writing. Using various found archives and artefacts, this event attempts to shed light on an alternative alphabetical system for living, behaving and surviving.

The installation Grandma’s Cubby attempts to materialise a vision to survive within the environment which can feel suffocating and limited. Such an environment might be an over-crowded space with various things hovering between important and unimportant, traces of unspoken fear and trauma attached to things and spoken words.

“I created a replica of the small corner which I used to inhabit for a long time, but I cannot really put my fingers on how to define it. Making various kinds of collections of things is my personalised way to create a sense of agency and a breathing space amidst the clutter and hoard, literally and figuratively. Organising a series of collections forms a simple exercise to perform orderliness in the middle of chaos, living and dying. I refer to the room as the Grandma’s Cubby because this was the look of the space where my Grandma spent most of her days. But this can also be the room of other Grandmas, elder figures, manifesting the impulses to observe, tidy up in a persistent manner, listen quietly, and tell stories without being bothered by the division between fact and fiction. Developing a cubby amidst the rubbles represents the resilience to go on and the capacities to make use of everything including the discarded feelings.”

This event will take place on the last day of the exhibition Underdeveloped #4.

A mexican bingo loteria with exciting prizes, screen printing patch-making, radio broadcast reading, stories and music, delicious dinner prepared with Het Rode Keukentje and DJ’s for dancing!

During this event we are raising money for the Mesoamerican Caravan that is traveling from Mexico to Brazil for COP30, organized by Indigenous and campesino social movements. It is a space of encountering and mobilization for the people and communities that fight in defense of Mother Earth. They need funds, support and lots of people following their travels to ensure their safety as much as possible.

This Underdeveloped #4 closing event will take place on Sunday 16 November from 5 – 9.30 PM

Save the date! On Friday 28 November at 7 PM, we will open Rememory. 

Artists: Kenneth Aidoo, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Nazif Lopulissa, Agnes Waruguru and Aimée Zito Lema.

Rememory is a group exhibition by artists who rewrite forgotten or erased histories and reclaim them through memory. Inspired by Toni Morrison’s concept of rememory—the active retrieval of suppressed memories—this exhibition explores how memory can serve as a tool to reshape and reinterpret the past.

With a critical eye on dominant narratives and historiography, historical imagery, and archival material, the participating artists Kenneth Aidoo, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Nazif Lopulissa, Agnes Waruguru and Aimée Zito Lema highlight the forgotten aspects of cultural memory. Recurring themes include feelings of displacement and the experience of a cultural in-between space.

Materiality plays a central role in these artists’ work. Memories are explored and conveyed through paper, textiles, dried flowers, water, herbs and other media with a personal and cultural significance. In this way, remembering becomes not only a personal act but also a means to reorganize the past as an act of resistance, healing, and connection.

Following Unknown Landscapes, Rememory is the second exhibition of a three-part exhibition series. In this trilogy, curator Cynthia Jordens examines the meanings of the concept of “transformation” and artists’ ideas about a society that calls for it.

Join us during the last Friday of the exhibition Rememory, for a culinary closing event together with curator Cynthia Jordens and the artists out of the exhibition.

Join us on Sunday 25 January for a festive New Year’s edition of Brandstof, during the exhibition Rememory. The evening begins with a guided exhibition tour by curator Cynthia Jordens, followed by a special performance in dialogue with the exhibition’s theme by artist Nazif Lopulissa. We will close off the night by raising a glass to a new year filled with art!

About the performance

In his performance, Lopulissa explores a state he experiences as a cultural in-between space: living between different worlds. He combines personal narratives with abstract visual languages and experiments with the boundaries of painting. During the performance, Lopulissa conceals and reveals parts of his (family) history, allowing memories to be erased and reshaped. Through the use of bleach, he plays with the tension between past and future—between what disappears and what remains.

Worlds end unevenly. Languages fall silent, reefs lose colour, commons are fenced, and bodies become disposable. Endings are not universal events but situated ruptures, unfolding differently across geographies, histories, and relations of power. The end of the world is therefore plural and partial, happening repeatedly and often without recognition.

The Ground Is Shifting begins within this unstable zone between exhaustion and emergence. It centres on contemporary forms of environmental extraction and the worlds they hollow, displace, and rearrange. The artists investigate how landscapes are reorganised by global resource economies and how these material operations reverberate through bodies, territories, and ecologies, while also tracing what flickers in their wake: afterlives of matter, gestures of resistance, and fragments of emerging imaginaries.

The exhibition invites you to enter the afterlife of the world. Through dim light and mineral glow, Garage Rotterdam takes on the atmosphere of a cavern. A place where shadows stretch and surfaces absorb. Within this muted terrain, works appear gradually, like constellations surfacing from sediment. Through installations, moving images, and material experiments, fractures and absences become scripts of resistance. And the anomaly – the thing that should not exist becomes the seed of another beginning.

About At the End(s) of the World

A three-part exhibition cycle exploring extraction, planetary instability, and post-collapse imaginaries.

How do we create meaning in a world shaped by ecological, social and political crises? Moving between popular and contemporary ways of understanding, it shows that planetary crisis is shaped not only by physical and economic conditions, but also by cultural imaginaries. Collapse is not a single terminal event – it is a shifting threshold where loss, resistance and new forms of life coexist.

The journey begins with the ground beneath our feet, and expands to planetary ways of sensing, ritual and re-worlding. At the End(s) of the World invites you to imagine ways of living during – and beyond – collapse.

Join us for a special edition of Brandstof during Museumnacht 010, for a performative evening with artist Natalia Papaeva who explores the theme of environmental erosion through performance, listening and conversation. Moving between sound, gesture and collective attention, Trembling into the Unknown invites you to inhabit instability as a space of sensing, reflection and shared becoming.

Experience a special performance by Tingyi Jiang during Brandstof. Make It Fit – A Life Script is a multidisciplinary performance exploring how language shapes authority, identity, and social norms. Moving between singing, conversation, and staged speech, the work examines the internalised script of “making it fit.” By reconfiguring these forms, it reveals their control mechanisms while allowing space for deviation, vulnerability, and chance, unfolding as an evolving live script between theatre and everyday life.

Dinner among the artworks? At Garage Rotterdam, you can. On Friday evening, July 3, art lovers are invited to take a seat at the table surrounded by the works in How To: Living Through Instructions. Together with the curator and several artists, guests will discuss the exhibition in an intimate setting. The four-course dinner will be prepared by chef Marnix Benschop. De Gouden Ton will provide the wine pairing.
