Opening of Order & Chaos

For many centuries now, art has been seen as a moment of order within the chaos of everyday life. Garage Rotterdam’s group exhibition, Order & Chaos, examines whether this ancient assumption still applies today.

To what extent are visual artists aware of the underlying logic during their creative process? If ‘something’ isn’t quite right, then why? Questions like this play a key part in the Order & Chaos group exhibition. How can you leave the ratio out of account, in order to create room for a different point of view

Jonas Ohlsson is one of the artists whose work is shown as part of Order & Chaos. During Brandstof (Fuel), the activity that is regularly programmed to offer additional content, he will perform an Electro Lecture using his other name of Blodfet & DJ Lonely. It will be a mixture of psychedelic and electronic music. To put it in his own words: “Sit-down comedy meets noise meets concrete poetry, in which opinions, sounds, beats, effects and drones are moving back and forth between various layers of our consciousness.”

Garage Rotterdam gives young, talented artists the opportunity to present themselves during Klein Onderhoud. This time, the installation ‘Only the moment expresses the Obscene’ (Alleen het moment toont het Obscene) by Carlijn Voorneveld will be shown. Carlijn Voorneveld has been introduced by Gijs Assman, one of the artists who is participating in the current exhibition entitled Order & Chaos.

“Carlijn Voorneveld’s installation consists of photographs, performances and videos. Her work of art shows the mysteries, the magic and secrets of our existence and the bizarre appearances of life. By turning the upsetting theme into a cheerful, yet a somewhat painful slapstick-like shape, she makes a sharp and mesmerising statement which engages, entertains as well as upsets and shocks the viewer.”

Vergeet benzine, diesel en elektriciteit. Wij zorgen voor nieuwe elementen waarmee je pas echt vooruit komt! Temidden van tentoonstelling Above Reality presenteert Garage Rotterdam Brandstof Nieuwe Stijl: een kunstzinnige talkshow met onder meer Peter Feiler.

In een serie korte gesprekken belicht Brandstof thema’s als verwondering, verbeelding en ‘het grote zijn’. Wat betekent verbeelding voor een schrijver of kunstenaar? En wat als je dingen ziet die er eigenlijk niet zijn?
Presentator Steven van Grinsven voelt zijn gasten aan de tand tijdens een dynamische avond die aan de werkelijkheid voorbij probeert te gaan.

Van Grinsven interviewt Peter Feiler (deelnemend kunstenaar Above Reality) over zijn werk en zijn kijk op ‘boven de realiteit uitstijgen’ en wat de weerklank hiervan is op zijn praktijk.
Drs. Mees van Hulzen (lecturer filosofie, UVA, Amsterdam) gaat in op het begrip metafysica.
Julia Geerlings (curator Oude Kerk, Amsterdam en freelance schrijver voor onder meer Metropolis M) is uitgedaagd een column te schrijven met de huidige tentoonstelling ‘Above Reality’ als uitgangspunt.
Neeltje van Doorn (drs. theologie en schrijfster) vertelt hoe het is om iets ‘te weten’ zonder dat daar tastbare bewijzen voor zijn.

Dit alles omlijst met muziek, filmfragmenten en poëzie zorgt voor een avond vol verrassingen. Brandstof is ditmaal gratis toegankelijk.

Steven van Grinsven
Steven van Grinsven (Tilburg, 1976) is freelance curator en schrijver. Jarenlang stond Van Grinsven aan het hoofd van de experimentele galerie ZINGERpresents in de Amsterdamse Pijp. Verder vindt Steven het fijn om te koken, lezen, eten met vrienden en vloekt hij graag. Daarnaast is hij een toegewijde supporter van Liverpool Football Club.

Iedere zondag om 15:00 uur kunnen individuele bezoekers kennis maken met Garage Rotterdam tijdens een wandelgesprek. Onder het genot van een drankje bezoek je samen met Germa Roos de huidige tentoonstelling, wat zeker leidt tot een goed gesprek.

Dressed totem poles, pressed cat litter and an industrial pyramid: the international group exhibition Now Age mixes nature, mysticism and spirituality with the everyday here and now. With a performance of Das Hund, a project of Samuel Levack & Jennifer Lewandowski. You’re welcome on our opening!

Presentator Steven van Grinsven en Now Age-curator Yasmijn Jarram duiken samen met kunstenaar Hadassah Emmerich in haar energieke werk. Emmerichs duizelingwekkende schilderingen bevatten mystieke beeldmotieven en decoratieve elementen. Als Nederlandse met Duitse, Chinese en Indonesische wortels houdt zij zich intensief bezig met de representatie van ‘het exotische’: hoe wordt ‘de ander’ of ‘het vreemde’ weergegeven? Naast culturele identiteit spelen religie, natuur en psychologie een rol in haar werk.

Kunsthistorica Suzanne Rietdijk verbonden aan het prestigieuze Goldsmiths College in Londen, vertelt over de satirische roman ‘Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions’. Deze wiskundige klassieker uit 1884 wordt nog steeds uitgegeven en bevraagt de grenzen van onze eigen kennis en realiteit.

Ook te gast is Thijs Gerbrandy, die zich tijdens zijn studie aan de School of Oriental and African Studies in Londen specialiseerde in de kunsten van het Midden-Oosten. Hij is werkzaam voor het Tropenmuseum en is museumdocent in het Rijksmuseum. Gerbrandy weet westerse en niet-westerse werelden met elkaar te verbinden.

De band Danielle Liebeskind slaat tenslotte een brug tussen muziek en spiritualiteit. Danielle Liebeskind is Danielle Papenborg met op gitaar Martin Luiten (The Julie Mittens) en Donné Brok (Donné & Désirée) op percussie. Deze muzikanten zijn de Nijmeegse kopstukken van de improvisatie muziekscene. Live in Garage Rotterdam brengen zij een avontuurlijke mix van experiment, improvisatie en meditatie.

Be blown away by the music of Boom Petit! Modern jazz with tenor sax, keys, bass and drums. The wide variety of genres, beats and melodies makes this band rather unique. Their compositions incorporate elements of many different music genres, focusing mainly on funk, soul, world and rock. Explosive grooves are the result of this mixture. There is a good balance between structure and improvisation. In short: Boom Petit plays dynamic music full of energy that will appeal to both the critical expert and to the general public.

The online art platform, Trendbeheer.com, has been shining a spotlight on the visual arts for the past ten years. This anniversary will be celebrated in Garage Rotterdam. The exhibition ‘Let Us Meet Inside You’ provides a sparkling overview of ten years of art that matters.

Van Wettum is geïnteresseerd in onze alledaagse bebouwde omgeving, in zijn foto installaties krijgen deze plekken een vervreemdende en fictieve lading.

Langkamp onderzoekt het medium video op experimentele wijze. In zijn sequenties en installaties wordt de camera zelf de belangrijkste acteur – en de manier waarop deze de werkelijkheid opneemt en weergeeft het eigenlijke thema.

Beide kunstenaars registreren op een eigenzinnige manier alledaagse situaties en ruimtes om van daaruit een nieuwe werkelijkheid te creëren.

The artists in the exhibition Hemelbestormers (sky troopers, idealists) take us on a journey to the stars. The exhibition explores the proliferation of outer space as aspired idea or metaphor, for an attempt to understand the world we live in. Beyond the force of gravity, heaven serves as an observatory: a conceptual space where we can reflect on our complex earthly existence. You’re welcome at the opening!

Aan de hand van het werk en film fragmenten van Marinus Boezem en Jeroen Jongeleen gaat curator Nathanja van Dijk in gesprek met Jeroen Jongeleen over ongrijpbare fenomenen, overrompelende schoonheid en dappere pogingen het onmetelijke te omvatten.

Jeroen Jongeleen is een avontuurlijke kunstenaar. Telkens is hij opzoek naar onverwachte wegen om het stedelijk landschap te verkennen. Als een hedendaagse ‘situationist internationale’ maakt hij zogenaamde dérives.

Het werk Running Shape #04 / In search of a perfect square is het eerste werk in een serie waarbinnen (hard)lopen een belangrijk ingrediënt is. In dit werk tekent Jongeleen “de verhalen van de goden” na in het landschap, door zijn eigen vierkanten olifantenpaadje te lopen. De Running Shape roept Marinus Boezem’s beroemde werk Signing the sky above the port of Amsterdam in herinnering, waarin Boezem zich de hemel toe-eigent door deze te signeren met een sportvliegtuigje. De sporen die Jongeleen in het landschap achterlaat tonen verwantschap met Boezem’s beroemde land-art werk De Groene Kathedraal.

Helaas kan Marinus Boezem zelf onverhoopt niet aanwezig zijn op deze avond. Zijn werk en gedachtegoed zal in het gesprek met Jongeleen echter uitgebreid aan bod komen.

Sections of minerals, fake scars, a forest’s shades of green. Travel plays an important role in the work of these artists. They have various ways of showing how science converges with our imagination. From a drawing to a video, and from actual research to an unconventional interpretation.

Territorial Drift, a group exhibition, is all about connections between places, memories and history. Six artists explore places where personal and political stories lie hidden away, like layers of earth. They share a fascination for dissecting changing landscapes: ruins, mines, jungles.

Territorial Drift at Garage Rotterdam will be opened on Friday 4 March at 20.00 hrs.

De Rotterdamse band Half Way Station staat bekend om avontuurlijke livebezettingen en onconventionele instrumentatie. Vaak betrekken zij architectuur, film, dans en beeldende kunst in hun performances. Op eigenzinnige wijze combineert de band invloeden uit blues, folk, psychedelica en synthpop. De beroemde ‘field recordings’ van de Amerikaanse musicoloog Alan Lomax (1915-2002) zijn een belangrijke inspiratiebron.

In het kader van de tentoonstelling Territorial Drift presenteert Half Way Station een exclusieve avond vol muziek, verhalen en spoken word. Live in Garage Rotterdam!

The Operawandeling (opera walk) is a recurring event that charms locals and visitors alike. This year it connects three locations that are relevant to Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction with music theatre.

Garage Rotterdam is one of the concert venues during this year opera walk on 21 and 22 May. During the concert between 14.30-15.30 hrs the exhibition is closed. Before and after the concert we are open as usual.

The Operawandeling is sold out, so there are no tickets available anymore.

Welkom in het Death Cafe. Na een weergaloos succes in de Engelse pubs reist het Death Cafe nu de wereld over. Death Cafe Nederland organiseert speciaal voor Brandstof een gesprek over de dood rond de koffietafel van de Garage Rotterdam.

Praten over de dood helpt je om mooier te leven. Met het wegvallen van religies en tradities wordt het delen van ervaringen over de dood steeds ongemakkelijker. Tijdens het Death Cafe mag iedereen zijn of haar gedachtes over de dood delen, juist dan komen de meest ontroerende, ingrijpende en verbazingwekkende verhalen boven. De dood, zo blijkt, is een bron van leven.

Bij een Death Cafe komen verschillende (vaak voor elkaar onbekende) mensen samen voor gesprekken over de dood rondom de koffietafel. De avond bestaat uit een groepsgesprek, zonder agenda, doel of thema. De avond wordt ingeleid en begeleid door filosoof Gerko Tempelman en Trui Simmelink, ervaringsdeskundige met de dood.

Entree: gratis toegang (donaties voor Death Cafe Nederland zijn altijd welkom)

The Preacher Men is hét nieuwe jazz trio bestaande uit Efraim Trujillo op saxofoons, Rob Mostert op de indrukwekkende Hammond B3 en Chris Strik op drums. Deze drie absolute topmuzikanten uit de Nederlandse jazz scene delen de liefde voor de klassieke hammond trio’s uit de jaren ’50 en ’60.

Ieder voor zich hebben ze hun sporen in binnen- en buitenland verdiend. Als The Preacher Men gaan ze terug naar de tijd van Blue Note en Verve, de tijd van helden als Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Lou Donaldson & Stanley Turrentine, de tijd van rokerige jazzclubs in Chicago en New York. Een diepgroovend Hammond orgel, een scheurende saxofoon en back beats waar je niet bij kan stilzitten!

The Preacher Men zetten een ‘steamy’ show neer waar het plezier maar ook het talent en vakmanschap vanaf spatten. De mannen zijn volledig op elkaar ingespeeld maar blijven elkaar uitdagen zodat de kleinste muzikale verrassing kan leiden tot een intense improvisatie.

Op donderdag 30 juni speelt The Preacher Men in het kader van North Sea Round Town live in Garage Rotterdam. Gratis entree, vol=vol.

Come and be fascinated by Physical Fiction in Garage Rotterdam. You are cordially invited to the opening of Physical Fiction on 2 September 2016, 20.00 hrs, with the poetic performance ‘Pool Made of Mirrors, by artist and writer Annee Grøtte Viken (NO, 1984).

Contours and shapes, patches and fragments. Using the human body as their anchor, eight visual artists play with narrative and representation in the group exhibition Physical Fiction.

Whereas some artists see the body as a tool, others consider the artwork to be a character. Everyday images become part of unrecognisable scenes, while mysterious titles hint at a storyline. In a number of different ways, these works of art move between concrete reality and the intangible realm of imagination and association.

With Jakup Auce, Gwenneth Boelens, Helen Dowling, Amélie Grözinger, Rachel de Joode, Megan Rooney, Kate Steciw and Nora Schultz.

Megan Rooney (CA, 1985) is one of the artists in the international group exhibition Physical Fiction. Her practice unfolds across painting and floating murals, written and spoken word, sculpture and installation. Within the context of Physical Fiction, Megan Rooney will present her performance f on your tongue in Garage Rotterdam.

Centered around a text exploring themes of lassitude, memory, desire and apathy, f on your tongue mixes performance, language and dance. Wearing hand-painted artist-made costumes, Megan Rooney creates an intense viewing experience.

Most of us have stood in the moonlight near the water at least once in our lives. Breathing a sigh of happiness at our fortune of being able to witness this magnificent image. But the opposite side of the coin is also present: while swimming in the ocean at night, pitch black, endless emptiness surrounds you. The darkness stretches out around us. It’s a metaphor for human beings finding their way in the unknown.

The above is all too familiar to visual artists who deal with intangible reality. The works of art in this exhibition contain both light and darkness. They represent what defines human existence, something we cannot quite grasp.

You are cordially invited to the opening of the exhibition on Friday 18 November 2016 at 20.00 hrs. There is no entrance fee and it is not necessary to register in advance. Sparkling like the surface of the ocean at is open until 15 January 2017.

We look forward to welcoming visual artist of international acclaim Robert Zandvliet on Friday 16 December 2016 for a unique drawing workshop in Garage Rotterdam.

This true painter from Rotterdam aims to ‘find’ the image in his work. Looking for what is hidden underneath the ever-changing appearance of objects, the question he asks himself time and time again in this process is whether a painting needs context or whether it is self-contained. Does the painting need any commentary from him, as its creator? Based on this thought, Zandvliet has come up with a very special assignment for this workshop.

On Saturday night, 4 March, all cultural establishments in Rotterdam will re-open their doors during Museumnacht010. For this occasion, Garage Rotterdam will host a special performance of the show CLARITY by iET in collaboration with Conny Janssen Danst & Davide Bellotta.

CLARITY was put together in connection with the release of singer-songwriter iET’s new album. Dance/film-maker Davide Bellotta enlisted the help of two dancers for his adaptation of the songs in dance and images. They add a new dimension to the live music of iET. The result is a unique performance for all the senses.

You can visit the exhibition, How to disappear completely, either before or after the performance. The performance will take place at 20:30 and at 22:30 hours and the exhibition is open continuously between 20:00 and 01:00 hours.

Master Chef Laurence van Bergeijk will prepare a sumptuous, vegetarian three-course dinner. Local and seasonal vegetables are the main ingredients for his dishes. The Gouden Ton, our wine merchant at Garage Rotterdam, will serve exquisite wines that have been carefully selected to accompany the food.

Price: € 35,- incl. 3 course diner and entrance fee exhibition. Wines selected by the Gouden Ton: € 17,50.
