What if technology is not adequate and sufficient? This question has become superfluous in our day and age of machine learning. What’s more, in this start-up society we tend to look down on impossibilities. We use words like ‘opportunity’ and ‘challenge’ in stead. And we learn algorithms to get to know our habits so they can be of use to us, whether we asked for it or not. Technology is there to serve us and if it doesn’t exist, we create it. Having said that, the first visual artists started using algorithms and formulas to generate images as early as the 1960s. The range of options was obviously much more limited at that time, but this art form was popular in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Croatia. Despite its mechanical nature, these works of art often resemble patterns from nature, biology and astronomy. The Blossom exhibition shows how these unusual works of art relate to the work of contemporary visual artists.

Brandstof | Secret Gardens

Brandstof | Secret Gardens
with Samantha Thole, Bas Meeuws en Bas Hendrikx

Flowers are typically Dutch..
Although flowers wilt quickly, they have always been popular components or materials for artists to work with. In the Brandstof, Secret Gardens we examine the works of artists and Avantgarde florists.

Production company HotelRebel (Rotterdam) is commissioned by the Dutch Flower Council to create a series video portraits – EXPOSÉ – about the inspiring floral artists, both home and abroad. The serie is broadcasted in four countries. We see how flowers are immortalised in ice, sugar and bouquets by true floral artists.

One of them, Bas Meeuws will be there to tell you about his work. He creates digital flower still lives that exhibit many similarities with paintings of the golden age.

Artist Samantha Thole, that created the flower murals for Blossom, teaches us about her research gendered botany. She tells us about the hidden stories in horticulture and shows us that flowers can be used as a form of protest.
