Meditations on Europe
Opening Meditations on Europe
On Friday the 18th of November at 8 PM, we gladly invite you to join the opening of the exhibition Meditations on Europe by curator Youri Appelo for Garage Rotterdam.
Artists: Hamza Halloubi, Nina Støttrup Larsen, Ghita Skali, Giulio Squillacciotti, Remco Torenbosch, Katarina Zdjelar.
What will the future hold for Europe? A great deal of uncertainty has been looming over Europe for years. Tensions are rising from both inside and outside of the continent. Growing right-wing nationalism that is advocating for separation from the European Union (EU) and the lack of democracy in the union is putting pressure on all member states. At the same time the war in Ukraine, refugee crises and the political instability in America are forcing Europe into collective action.
In the spirit of the fragmented and fluid nature of Europe, Meditations on Europe presents a series of independent and critical stories that deal with European histories, identities and issues. Meditations on Europe does not provide concrete answers, while it operates in line with the plea for a more democratic Europe. Every conscious and unconscious participant in the European project has the right to formulate their own answer to the question: how can we shape a more democratic, equal and pluriform future of Europe, based upon our personal positions and imaginations?
Brandstof: A European sense of belonging
During Brandstof: A European sense of belonging, the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) will give a presentation on how they contribute to a more inclusive, democratic and culturally conscious Europe. Friso Wiersum works in the communications department at ECF and during his presentation, he will reflect on ECF’s history, vision and their imaginations for the future of Europe. Can a sense of belonging exist without solidarity? Can culture sketch a common future?
In Meditations on Europe visitors have the right to formulate their own answers to what a more democratic, equal and pluriform Europe looks like in the future. Join this edition of Brandstof to dive into the answers of ECF.
