Crystalline floorpieces / Raw Umber (2017)
In Crystalline Floorpieces / Raw Umber, Jennifer Tee brings together textiles and ceramics in a work that stretches across the floor. The work is composed of thick strands of wool that have been hand-dyed in earthy umber tones, named after the dark brown earth pigment raw umber. The geometric structures of the knitting are inspired by crystal formations found in nature. The repetition of lines, planes, and patterns creates a rhythmic surface that invites a slow, attentive way of looking.
Hand-formed ceramic objects are placed on and around the textile surface. Their organic forms and tactile surfaces contrast with the regularity of the knitting and reinforce the association with a landscape. The work straddles the line between sculpture and a ritual space, inviting a physical and sensory experience of the space.
