Tampan Tree of life, Naga~Nagini (2024)

In Tampan Tree of Life, Naga~Nagini, Jennifer Tee brings together traditional weaving patterns from South Sumatra with mythological stories about the creation of the earth. Once again, the Tree of Life takes center stage in the composition, its branches fluidly transforming into the contours of mythological creatures. These are the male Naga and the female Nagini: beings with the features of a snake and a dragon.

In Indonesian creation myths, they already ruled the wild seas and the skies before land even existed. Using a meticulously assembled collage of dried tulip petals, Tee depicts these pre-existing forces of nature. The work reflects not only the fragility and transience of living nature, but also the powerful, spiritual dynamics of the cosmos and the climate.
