Opening Meditations on Europe

On Friday the 18th of November at 8 PM, we gladly invite you to join the opening of the exhibition Meditations on Europe by curator Youri Appelo for Garage Rotterdam.

Artists: Hamza Halloubi, Nina Støttrup Larsen, Ghita Skali, Giulio Squillacciotti, Remco Torenbosch, Katarina Zdjelar.

What will the future hold for Europe? A great deal of uncertainty has been looming over Europe for years. Tensions are rising from both inside and outside of the continent. Growing right-wing nationalism that is advocating for separation from the European Union (EU) and the lack of democracy in the union is putting pressure on all member states. At the same time the war in Ukraine, refugee crises and the political instability in America are forcing Europe into collective action.

In the spirit of the fragmented and fluid nature of Europe, Meditations on Europe presents a series of independent and critical stories that deal with European histories, identities and issues. Meditations on Europe does not provide concrete answers, while it operates in line with the plea for a more democratic Europe. Every conscious and unconscious participant in the European project has the right to formulate their own answer to the question: how can we shape a more democratic, equal and pluriform future of Europe, based upon our personal positions and imaginations?

Can a sense of belonging exist without solidarity? Can culture sketch a common future?

In Meditations on Europe visitors have the right to formulate their own answers to what a more democratic, equal and pluriform Europe looks like in the future. Join this edition of Brandstof to dive into the answers of ECF.

Opening Screen, Screen on my Phone, Who's the Fairest of Them All?

Looking for oneself has been a journey throughout history. In this quest, humankind has used various technologies, from dark reflective water and luxury mirrors on walls, to the screens on our phones. We have created myths and fairytales around these mirrors, delivering warnings about fragile humanity and its values. Mirrors have also been used to entertain drunk guests or laugh at (bully) them at public celebrations.

Today, an object that reflects a “clear” image of oneself is the screen of our phones. The hidden and fast-evolving cameras behind those screens now show us our clear, distorted, adjusted and beautified faces – the protagonists of contemporary fairytales. With face filters on a daily basis, we are engaged in a ritual of masking in front of our phones, challenging binary structures, and experiencing another self. All while feeding into exploitative social media production, ambitious startups and AI development. With every technological development, a slice of fiction becomes a reality. Fiction is a temporary state of identity searching for freedom of movement and expression. While being occupied with ourselves, new fairytales are being produced.

Brandstof x Museumnacht 010

Brandstof is a recurring public programme including lectures, talks, music and performances, to dive into the theme of Garage Rotterdam’s exhibitions. During Brandstof on Saturday the 4th of March, Garage Rotterdam and Museumnacht 010 will join forces. This special edition of Brandstof, curated by Bogomir Doringer, will focus entirely on the theme of his current exhibition Screen, Screen on my Phone, Who’s the Fairest of Them All?

During the evening, the artists Natalia Kharetskaya and Zalán Szakács will perform together.

Natalia Kharetskaya is a Lithuanian-born vocalist, composer and producer. Her performance Cosmic Bride pushes the boundaries of a concert experience by using movement-based control systems, altering the sounds of the string quartet and voice. With wearable sensor technology, movement becomes a musical instrument and a new dynamic expression.

“The possibilities to tell stories through unique materiality of immersive audio are awe-inspiring – it elevates the experience with the sensation of being in orbit around the voice of the performer and takes the listener into a literally spatial adventure.”

Zalán Szakács created the scenography of the Cosmic Bride performance. He uses volumetric projection techniques inspired by his ongoing research into expanded cinema. Geometric shapes become spatial as they transform the gallery space into an immersive environment. Based on Cosmic Bride’s sounds, the light beam will be triggered, changing its colour, speed, and opacity. The scenography creates an immaterial space, as the light creates a veil between the performer and the audience.

Natafelen: Palestinian dinner by Amanny Ahmad

Natafelen with Amanny Ahmad is sold out!

At The Table is paired with three different food happenings that tackle various appetites. For the opening, Micheline Nahra will host a food experience shaped by the paradox of diplomacy. For Natafelen, Amanny Ahmad will provision a Palestinian dinner foraged from industrialised and natural landscapes.

‘Ifrich : Rub’

Garage Rotterdam invites you to the final dining event of the exhibition At the Table, by artist Amanny Ahmad. ‘Ifrich : Rub’ is an exploration of our relationship to the land, presented through the experience of a family style dinner. Through the lens of her Palestinian heritage, Ahmad presents a meal, alongside sounds, images, and text that expand on the interconnectedness of our bodies to the landscapes that keep us alive. The recipes she serves are both a record and a manifestation of resistance and survival within Palestine, through not only their ingredients, but also through the stories of the people and seeds they tend to.

Amanny Ahmad is a Palestinian-American artist, chef, land worker, and folk herbalist, currently based in the high altitude desert of the land of the pueblo people, taos, New Mexico. In her research-based practice, she studies things small & large: whole systems design, food as language, land as life, historical & contemporary relationships between humans & non humans, botany, mycology, indigenous culinary traditions & plant use, histories of resistance; and how those things can teach us about preservation, survival, and world-making. Her research culminates in a variety of forms: writing, photographs, objects, garden design, fermentation, herbal medicines, and most publicly, large scale meals, often cooked over live fire, incorporating wild ingredients. Being in, on, off, and with the land is her main priority and joy.

Opening Choreographed Events
By curator Bogomir Doringer

On Friday the 1st of September, we will kick-off the cultural season with Choreographed Events, the second exhibition by curator Bogomir Doringer.

The interactive artworks in Choreographed Events may be choreographed by various factors. It could be the curator or artists behind this exhibition who have created the activations for you, it might be technology, it might be algorithmic processes choreographing the activations. Or you might be the choreographer within this exhibition because of your presence and interaction with the works.

The exhibition Choreographed Events could be designed to challenge conventional narratives, which some viewers might interpret through a conspiratorial lens. From another perspective, the lights, sound, motion and patterns could establish the relationship between activations in the exhibition space and natural phenomena.

Artists: Aliki van der Kruijs & Jos Klarenbeek, Heleen Blanken, Harm van den Dorpel, Jeppe Lange, Nanno Simonis, Studio Moniker and Sweet Scope.

Choreographed Events will be on show from 2 September – 5 November. Join us for the exhibition opening on Friday the 1st of September at 7 PM!

Opening Traces

On Friday the 17th of November, curator Nadine van den Bosch will open her first exhibition Traces for Garage Rotterdam.

Artists: Isabelle Andriessen, Maurice van Es, Alex Farrar, Vibeke Mascini, Narges Mohammadi, Noor Nuyten, Clémence de la Tour du Pin.

The scent of perfume, a cloud of breath dissolving in cold air, a tiny drop of sweat or the dying echo of a word that was spoken long ago. These are fragments of an impression that we wanted to leave behind, separated from the person to which they belong. We strive to create the best possible first impression, but we have no control over the hyper personal traces that remain after we disappear.

This emotional residue lingers in the room after our departure. The traces that we unintentionally left behind disappear as time goes by, slowly dissolving and becoming one with the world around us.

The exhibition Traces shows the slowly disappearing traces of our presence that is no longer there. What remains in the end are the memories that we leave behind – traces in
someone else’s brain.

Opening NO DANCING ALLOWED / 2

The enigmatic prohibition on bubbling during the Summer Carnival of 2023 in Rotterdam triggered a broader exploration of dance’s role within societal dynamics. Dance, a powerful form of non-verbal communication, has always been linked to socio-political shifts. It establishes collective ties across various settings, shaping culture and urban landscapes. Yet, attempts to control freedom of movement have led to the oppression of communities and individuals who dance differently, this way dance becoming a tool for racial profiling and reinforcing patriarchy.

The second edition of ‘NO DANCING ALLOWED’, the last exhibition curated by Bogomir Doringer at Garage Rotterdam, explores dance rituals in times of global constraints like the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars, and recent bans on raving and protesting in Italy. The exhibition dives into the historical interplay between body politics and dance, unravelling the threads that connect them and asking for thinking reflections on the moving spirit of dance within this evolving narrative.

The exhibition gathers works around Bogomir Doringer’s PhD and the term dance of urgency. This dance rises in times of personal and collective crises and aims to empower individuals and groups. The first edition of ‘NO DANCING ALLOWED’ unfolded at the frei_raum Q21 exhibition space in MuseumsQuartier Vienna in 2022.

Selma Selman will say it loud and clear: all spaces are taken, and our selfishness is causing global problems. After that, she speaks to Omer, maybe a fictional character, a deity, an acquaintance, a brother, a lover, or her homme fatale. Evidently, Omer personifies the patriarchy itself as the world we were born into, not the world we chose.

The criminalization of funk is the starting point for the artists’ research into the longstanding suppression of Afro-descendant’s artistic expressions in Brazil. Through looking at institutional prejudices — such as an anti-vagrancy law that resulted in the illegality of capoeira and other cultural manifestations — they tell a story of silencing. The project unites artists Mbé, Leyblack Beats and Luiz Felipe Lucas.

Opening Identity Flux

Identity Flux refers to a state of constant change in our being. Our identity and the way in which we present ourselves to the world is always in flux and subject to change. There is never merely one authentic self, but an interplay of various sides that appear in different situations. Playing a role or taking on an alter ego is a way to explore and develop the various aspects of our identity. It is a way to cherish hidden characteristics, to discover emerging desires and to explore various aspects of our identity within a framework we have chosen ourselves.

Creating an avatar in cyberspace, exploring gender roles, wearing a uniform: these are some of the answers to the human desire to escape from the restrictions and expectations of everyday life. These are ways in which we can give room to all aspects of our existence.

Identity Flux is the second group exhibition by curator Nadine van den Bosch at Garage Rotterdam. It offers insight into a parallel world in which appearances are carefully constructed and turn up in different – at times very subtle – ways. The exhibition explores alternative identities and celebrates duality.

Brandstof: Air Tonalities

Air Tonalities is a performance that explores air as an artistic medium to create form and sound. Elise Ehry and Kitty Maria van Ekeren perform as two unemployed air hostesses using their non-industrial instruments like clay horns and silent flutes. The intimate sounds of their hand-crafted instruments come together with the sounds of DIY soldered electronic circuits. The voices of the air hostesses are amplified creating noisy and disruptive soundscapes.
