Opening & Jubileumfeest
Garage Rotterdam is celebrating its 5th anniversary! We look forward to welcoming you on Friday 12 May so we can start celebrating this anniversary with you during the opening of Humble. Will you join the party?
In an era in which social media and self-promotion seem important, we are specifically encouraged to display our ambitious and vain characteristics, in order to get on in life, to carve out a career. Would being humble make sense in this day and age, or would you simply be working against your own interests?
The group exhibition Humble exhibits works of art that reflect the significance of being humble. This is an exhibition which certainly doesn’t have an enormous ego.

Opening exhibition
Garage Rotterdam will start the new cultural season by opening Nora, a group exhibition. We want to extend to you our warmest welcome to attend the preview of this exhibition on Friday 1 September at 19:00 hours. During the same evening we would also like to introduce you to our new curator, Sjoerd Kloosterhuis.
Nora is the main character in Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘A doll’s house’ dating from 1879. She had the courage to go in search of her own identity, and dared to pursue her own individual liberty. The search for identity is, however, timeless, and not restricted solely to women. In a contemporary performance of ‘A doll’s house’, a man or someone with a less traditional gender identity could just as easily play the role of Nora.
The group exhibition Nora criticises the current belief that identity is unalterable. Recent years have seen increasing openness surrounding various forms of sexuality. Nevertheless, a lot of ignorance on this matter still prevails among the public at large. It is the exhibition’s ambition to contribute, by displaying videos and installations, to increasing the visibility of gender diversity.
We cordially invite you to come and see the exhibition during the opening on Friday 1 September at 20:00 hours. Some of the artists who are participating – and our new curator Sjoerd Kloosthuis – will also be present and they will be happy to discuss their work with you. During the opening, the curator will explain the idea behind the exhibition and there will be music from Celestial Terrestrial & Nelson (Club von Westen).

Brandstof | Filmscreening

Opening tentoonstelling
From 20 April 2018 Garage Rotterdam presents the group exhibition Detached Involvement by curator Bas Hendrikx who is the new curator of Garage Rotterdam. Featuring the work of eight visual artists. This exhibition is about works of art that became known to the general public in an unconventional way.
The history of how most works of art become known is clear to us: they originate in the artist’s studio and make their way to exhibitions and the general public. However, Detached Involvement is about works of art that did not become known to the public in a conventional way. These works were sometimes only ever seen from the corner of an eye, in a film or on a poster. Other works disappeared backstage after a while.
Detached Involvement is about props, replicas, objects that were considered lost and projects that were never carried out. They evolve or disappear over time, either because of lack of, or excess of visibility.
This exhibition offers a view of the circumstances in which these objects and works of art were created. And how has the double life that these works of art have led influenced their status?
Featuring the work of Max Cole (US), Kristien Daem (BE), Michel François (BE), Philip Janssens (FR), Inge Meijer (NL), Marina Pinsky (RU), Raniero Vrancken (NL) and Blaine Western (NZ).
New Curator:
Bas Hendrikx is the new curator of Garage Rotterdam! He has developed exhibitions in the Netherlands for De Appel, Impakt, Marres, museum De Domijnen. Also abroad for Skulptur Bredelar (Germany) and CIAP Kunstverein (Belgium). His book Authenticity? Observations and Artistic Strategies in the Post-Digital Age was published by Valiz in 2017. Hendrikx has extensive experience with digital art working for stedelijk.nl, deappel.nl and impakt.nl. He is the former curator of P/////AKT and he is currently working on Kunsthalle Amsterdam.
Detached Involvement is on show from April 20- July 8, 2018.
Extra activities:
Brandstof:
In collaboration with: Poetry International
June 2, 16.30 hrs.
Brandstof with Puck Vonk & Nachoem M. Wijnberg
It all starts with breathing is een spoken word performance van Puck Vonk.
Aanmelding Brandstof 2 juni

The Fool
The Fool is a theatrical guided tour by choreographer Connor Schumacher. Using the basic metaphoric code of Opening and Closing, The Fool analyzes what is real, what is moving, what is meaning and what are the myths we gather around us. The Fool helps us to reflect on the body and its ability to perceive its surroundings and the way it uses the past and the future to help construct meaning for our survival. Following The Fool is to draw a card of new beginnings, to take the risk of not believing, and of childlike wonder.
A Dansateliers production, financially supported by De Gemeente Roterdam and Fonds Podiumkunsten/ Nieuwe Makersregeling.

Opening Blossom
With Philip Janssens, Hans Köhler, Georg Nees, Sylvia Roubaud, Manfred Robert Schroeder, Samantha Thole, Edward Zajec and Vilko Žiljak.
What if technology is not adequate and sufficient? This question has become superfluous in our day and age of machine learning. What’s more, in this start-up society we tend to look down on impossibilities. We use words like ‘opportunity’ and ‘challenge’ in stead. And we learn algorithms to get to know our habits so they can be of use to us, whether we asked for it or not. Technology is there to serve us and if it doesn’t exist, we create it.
Having said that, the first visual artists started using algorithms and formulas to generate images as early as the 1960s. The range of options was obviously much more limited at that time, but this art form was popular in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Croatia. Despite its mechanical nature, these works of art
often resemble patterns from nature, biology and astronomy. The Blossom exhibition shows how these unusual works of art relate to the work of contemporary visual artists.

Brandstof | Secret Gardens
Brandstof | Secret Gardens
with Samantha Thole, Bas Meeuws en Bas Hendrikx
Flowers are typically Dutch..
Although flowers wilt quickly, they have always been popular components or materials for artists to work with. In the Brandstof, Secret Gardens we examine the works of artists and Avantgarde florists.
Production company HotelRebel (Rotterdam) is commissioned by the Dutch Flower Council to create a series video portraits – EXPOSÉ – about the inspiring floral artists, both home and abroad. The serie is broadcasted in four countries. We see how flowers are immortalised in ice, sugar and bouquets by true floral artists.
One of them, Bas Meeuws will be there to tell you about his work. He creates digital flower still lives that exhibit many similarities with paintings of the golden age.
Artist Samantha Thole, that created the flower murals for Blossom, teaches us about her research gendered botany. She tells us about the hidden stories in horticulture and shows us that flowers can be used as a form of protest.

Performance Marthe Ramm Fortun
Marthe Ramm Fortun’s performances present themselves through recited, site-specific texts and ephemeral sculptural boundaries. There are always several languages at play– the linguistic and the poetic; the sculptural and the bodily– interwoven and deliberate, they inscribe closed off institutional spaces with persistent and poetic feminisms. On a lawn of spring flowers in-between the Medieval cast iron fences of access and risk, Fortun presents a new work within the exhibition context of De Stad, de stad.
TALKS about architecture: Mary Duggan
TALKS about architecture is a lecture-series that offers a podium to emerging international architecture practices. TALKS approaches architecture primarily as an artistic discipline which derives its social relevance from its poetical and spatial qualities. TALKS is an initiative of Rotterdam-based architecture office De Kort Van Schaik and is organized in collaboration with AIR.
We are proud to announce that Mary Duggan will kick-off this series of TALKS about architecture. Her lecture on Friday June 14th will be the first of four in the 2019 TALKS about architecture program. Mary Duggan Architects is an architecture and design studio established in March 2017. Duggan is committed to the delivery of well-conceived and thoughtfully-detailed architecture. The ethos of her practice is driven by the ambition to understand the spirit of the places in which they build. Interested in the creative potential of cross-disciplinary interaction, the practice supports a residency program for emerging and established artists and makers. To date this residency includes a ceramicist, an illustrator and a sculptor, all of whom contribute to the development of live projects in the office.
