The Terrestrial Gathering of the Mermaids – PURE
In The Terrestrial Gathering of the Mermaids – PURE, the artist MingJou Chen delves into the self-awareness of East Asian women – drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and cultural roots. In this piece of work, she creates an oceanic landscape filled with love songs, struggles, moments of disorientation and healing rituals. MingJou Chen explores storytelling through an intuitive, multidisciplinary approach. She seamlessly intertwines body language, moving images, objects, sound, and spoken word to tell stories that engage the senses and memories. According to Chen, performance is a powerful tool to share experiences and gain a deeper understanding of our different perspectives.
In her work, MingJou Chen also examines non-human phenomena to approach movement and perception from a different point of view. Her observations offer new insights into how we live and interact with our surroundings. Her fascination with the underwater world plays a central role in this exploration. Inspired by her experiences as a scuba diver and her thorough research into coral reefs, she creates spaces in which encounters between worlds – human and non-human – become possible.
