Talisman

Saar Scheerlings her sculptures – Talisman – evoke associations with talismans from ancient civilizations. These protective objects – intended to bring luck, ward off evil, or provide spiritual strength – receive a contemporary interpretation in her work. Scheerlings creates her Talismans from recycled foam, covered with hand-painted silk or repurposed linen. Through her intuitive technique, in which the materials are bound together, a unique visual language emerges. Each piece has its own character and seems to carry stories or memories within it.

Scheerlings translates the traditional function of talismans into a modern context. She emphasizes the importance of sustainability and craftsmanship in a world dominated by technology and mass production. Her works connect the personal with the universal, as carriers of memory and symbolism. With her Talismans, Scheerling questions tradition, modernity, and what we, as humans, wish to protect or safeguard. Scheerlings shows how objects can connect us to a deeper, often forgotten spiritual layer and reminds us that craftsmanship and symbolism, even in a digital age, can offer meaning and stability.
