‘Return, an epic journey’, 2021, 15min
A film by Rita Mukebo in collaboration with Joseph Kasauand Lukas Stucki.

In a short film produced by the Centre d’art Waza Lubumbashi, Mukebo tests the significance of a mask by visiting the Tshokwe community, the curatorof the Musée National de Lubumbashi and the university library. The film is inspired by the approach taken by Susan Vogel in Fang, an epic Journey, but puts it in the context of the restitution of cultural property.

The Story of Lwanzo Lwa Mikubafilm is presented as a poetic ode to the copper smelters of the village bearing the same name. Beyond it being the celebration of the first place where the crosses were created, it was necessary to create and bring awareness to this community as it has lost its power to freely create the Mikuba (cross) due to the privatization of the land where the raw material needed is found. It brings awareness to the disappearance of culture, tradition, yet, at the same time by telling this story, we are preserving it.
