Bertus Jonkers

Bert Jonkers studied painting, yoga and eastern philosophy at Artibus in Utrecht. His work ‘The City of Devotion’ was bought by the Dutch Centraal Museum Utrecht. Jonkers received international recognition for his constructions.

Drawings, water colours, paintings, photographs, mosaics, wall tapestries and even wallpaper designs; there isn’t much that Bertus Jonkers hasn’t done. However, he is mainly known for his miniature constructions, created during the last fifteen years of his life which are an apotheosis to all his former work. To Jonkers, building was the opposite of getting stuck into a rut: it was a synonym for space and positive movement.

Bertus Jonkers continually built his miniature cities, together they formed the core of a Gesamtkunstwerk expanding across his floors, stairs, walls and ceilings even into his garden. Jonkers constructed small boats, homes, apartments, temples and pyramids using sand, plaster, paint and other materials.
