Agnes Waruguru

Agnes Waruguru’s multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, needlework, and installation. At the core of her work is an exploration of materiality in space, intimately connected to personal identity politics and often drawing on women’s practices and traditional cultural markers. Her pieces may appear abstract, yet they are deeply rooted in memory and place. Drawing on personal experience, Waruguru creates landscapes that often evoke memory or emotion, inviting viewers to look closely, imagine, and explore.

She holds a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, USA, and her work has been exhibited across Europe, the Americas, South Africa, Brazil, France, and Kenya. Highlights include participation in the inaugural Stellenbosch Triennale, South Africa (2020), a nomination for the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs (2022) at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and an invitation to the 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Waruguru has also participated in residencies in Kenya, Australia, and The Netherlands, most recently completing her time at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She lives and works in Nairobi.
