Jaasir Linger

Jaasir Linger (Zoetermeer, Netherlands, 1991) is an interdisciplinary visual artist, photographer and filmmaker with Surinamese roots, based in Rotterdam. In his artistic practice he deals with Surinamese cultural heritage and the shared colonial history of Suriname with the Netherlands. All his artworks contain elements from the traditional Afro-Surinamese Winti religion and culture. Through his art, Linger tries to bring Winti into the world in a positive way – in contradiction to the negative image of Winti created by the Dutch colonial government and Christian churc. Linger contributes to the preservation, transmission and rehabilitation of Winti. In 2019, Linger graduated from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam as an autonomous image maker and in 2023 he obtained his Master of Arts from the Sandberg Institute. In 2017 he won the ‘Golden Freelancer Award’ with his interactive documentary VPRO – Gliphoeve – Een Vergeten Strijd. Linger’s works have been exhibited at the Museum Het Rembrandthuis, Amsterdam Museum, Nieuwe Instituut, Völkerkundemuseum Herrnhut, Bijbels Museum, Maritiem Museum Rotterdam and Documenta Fifteen.
